Alhaji Aliko Dangote Finally Officially Joins Twitter!

I am just trying to catch my breath here.
First, Pope Francis joins Twitter. And then Africa’s richest man and Africa’s most enigmatic, most respected, most…. Aliko Dangote decides on the last day of 2013 to join the rest of the mere mortals on the social network.
His handle – of course – is @AlikoDangote. And, he had barely joined, before he was verified by Twitter.
And for the first 6 people the chairman of the Dangote Group followed, well a tweet from the blogger, Feyi Fawhinmi captures it all:
Aliko following Jack Welch, Jeff Immelt & Bill Gates. These rich people are so incestous. Urgh. Follow a poor man bro and reduce inequality
— F (@DoubleEph) December 31, 2013

As at press time, “Aliko Dangote hasn’t tweeted yet, is following 8 people and has 12K followers.”

EVERGREEN CHRISTMAS QUOTES

Here’s a few Christmas quotes for the holiday season.

“This is the message of Christmas: We are never alone” – Taylor Caldwell, novelist

“A good conscience is a continual Christmas” – Benjamin Franklin

“Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.” –– Charles Schulz, ‘Peanuts’ creator

“The best Christmas trees come very close to exceeding nature” – Andy Rooney, CBS News writer

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas” – Calvin Coolidge, 30th president of the United States

“Mankind is a great, an immense family. This is proved by what we feel in our hearts at Christmas.” –– Pope John XXIII

“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?” – Dr. Seuss from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”

“Christmas is a necessity. There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we’re here for something else besides ourselves” – Eric Sevareid, CBS News journalist

“At Christmas, all roads lead home” – Marjorie Holmes, author

“It is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas when its mighty Founder was a child Himself” – Charles Dickens

“Always winter but never Christmas,” – C.S. Lewis from “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”

“A lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together,” – Garrison Keillor, writer

“Moving between the legs of tables and of chairs, rising or falling, grasping at kisses and toys, advancing boldly, sudden to take alarm, retreating to the corner of arm and knee, eager to be reassured, taking pleasure in the fragrant brilliance of the Christmas tree” T.S. Eliot, writer

“I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph,” – a young Shirley Temple, actress

“I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys” – Charles Dickens, 19th century author

“One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day. Don’t clean it up too quickly” – Andy Rooney

“Mail your packages early so the post office can lose them in time for Christmas” – Johnny Carson, TV host

Substances That Benefit The Body But Are Harmful To The Teeth

In the world of foods, a lot of weirdos apply. It turned out that many foods that benefit the body are harmful to the teeth. Here’s a list of some of such foods…

Milk
Nutritionists note that milk is a healthy source of calcium. Other top sources of this mineral are cheese, turnip greens, oranges, and broccoli; but milk not only has the most calcium, it’s also a great source of vitamin D, riboflavin, carotene, and retinol, among others.
However, despite these numerous pluses, milk can wreak havoc on your teeth — that is if you take much milk while you are careless with oral hygiene! A dentist, Dr. Deola Olonilua, says the lactose (a form of sugar) in milk rots the teeth as much as frizzy drinks do.
She warns that even though certain foods are healthy, the presence of certain elements or minerals in then can damage the teeth when the eater has prolonged exposure to such foods.
She says, “Milk has a sugar in it called lactose. The lactose in milk can be especially dangerous for children if they have it just before bedtime. This is because the milk will still be on their teeth as they sleep, and the sugars are converted to acids by oral bacteria. The acids can coat the teeth and consequently eat away at the tooth enamel. That is one of the ways people develop cavities.”
She advises that people should not hit the bed immediately after taking milk. Rather, she counsels, “You should rinse your mouth thoroughly after taking milk, or better still, brush your teeth as the last thing before bed.

Lemon
Though lemon drinks have detoxifying and other benefits, it can affect your teeth in many ways than one. Lemon contains citric acid, which, dentists say, causes enamel erosion and other dental problems.
The online portal, www.1800dentist.com,states, “Drinking lemon juice can put you at risk for tooth erosion, a condition where the thin, protective layer of enamel slowly wears away from your teeth. Lemon juice contains acid, which irritates gums and softens tooth enamel.”
Experts warn that frequent consumption of products that contain acid will eventually destroy the enamel and expose underlying dentin, leaving your teeth vulnerable to sensitivity and tooth decay.
“Enamel erosion is one of the most common causes of cavities and tooth loss. This is because when you feast on these fruits for a long period, it means you are constantly bathing your teeth in acid and sugar; this will not allow your saliva to wash it away and neutralise the acids,” Olonilua says.
Other fruits in this category include orange, apple and grapefruit juice. The dentist says since these fruits also contain natural sugars, the best bet is to thoroughly rinse the mouth after taking them.

Dried fruits
In these days of eating on-the-go, dried fruits come in handy, as you can munch them at any time of the day. Plus, they are available all the year round, and you can stock up on them without any fear that they would rot.
However, experts say though dried fruits have admirably long shelf life, their detrimental effects on the teeth are enormous.
Olonilua says, “Dried fruits can be harmful to the teeth because of their concentrated sugar content and stickiness. When you eat dried fruits, parts of them can easily adhere to the teeth, while the sugar in them encourages bacteria to thrive in the mouth. This is very likely to erode tooth enamel.”
Scientists contend that since dried fruits are packed with non-soluble cellulose fibre, they can bind and trap sugars on and around the tooth, making it worse than sweets. They advise that after taking dried fruit, brush immediately; and if you have no access to brush, rinse your mouth thoroughly while running your tongue all over your teeth.

Red, white wine
When taken in moderation, wine is said to benefit the heart immensely. But then, wines do wreck havoc on teeth also.
Take the red wine, for instance, which, experts say, is a tasty mix of natural dyes, acids, and tannin. These three ingredients leave lasting effects on teeth, as they can contribute to teeth stain.
Researchers say saliva in our mouth helps to wash away food particles and protect against acidic foods. However, wine contains alcohol, and alcohol suppresses the production of saliva. When this happens frequently, it is harmful for teeth and it may lead to gum disease. In extreme cases, it may lead to oral cancer, experts warn.
A group of New York University researchers warn that if taken in excess, the acidic composition of wines can dissolve the enamel, make teeth porous and easily stained.
Another study published in the journalNutrition Researchstates that different types of wine may have a more negative impact on your teeth than others.
The study shows that white wine has an acid content that tends to increase the risk of dark dental stains if you also drink tea or similar beverages.
The researchers tested the effects of multiple red and white wines on teeth, and found that wine erodes the enamel of teeth, while white wine has a worse impact than red wine.
“Wine is highly acidic, and the acid leads to lower levels of minerals such as calcium and dental erosion. The white grape variety (riesling) was found to be the most acidic of the wines tested,” the study says.
Well, unlike the advice with other foods, experts say it is not recommended to brush immediately after drinking wine. “The softened teeth can be eroded by vigorous hygiene, so you should rinse — and wait a bit — before scrubbing your teeth,” the experts advise.
Olonilua says for this reason, it’s always a good idea to drink some water after drinking wine in order to rinse the acids from your mouth.

6 Things Women Notice In Men Right Away

First impressions may be made in moments, but they predict the course your relationships follow. So if you know what exactly about you draws in the votes, you can perfect it -- and do better with the opposite sex. So what do women notice immediately?
According to Dr Gordon Patzer, author of Looks: Why They Matter More Than You Ever Imagined, and one of the world’s leading authorities on physical attractiveness, a lot of what women notice in the first few minutes is appearance-based. “A substantial portion of the six features of a man are apparent, in terms of height, weight and overall physical attractiveness,” he says. And when appearances don’t make the cut, the door slams shut on further interactions. Here’s a list of things to keep that door open.

1. Physical stature
Yep, you knew this already: size matters. Height and weight are right on top of the list of things women notice. “Too much or too little of either immediately classifies the man as unattractive to women, and closes the door before less physically obviously features (such as confidence) can be determined,” says Dr Patzer. Take heart though, the acceptable range is influenced by the woman's own height and weight.

2. Appearances and attractiveness
Yes, beauty is skin deep, but it’s going to get women to explore what lies beneath. Attractiveness does include what you were born with, but your genes alone can't scuttle your chances. What really counts is what you do with your hair, clothes, grooming and basic hygiene. If you can't make the effort, women certainly are not going to work hard to learn more about you!

3. Smile
Once women are done assessing your overall build, women will look at your smile. “The ability to smile, particularly within the first few minutes of meeting, sends a welcoming, non-hostile signal to women,” says Dr Patzer. There is one proviso though -- the smile must show off reasonably good-looking teeth. It's never too late to fix an appointment with the dentist!

4. Humour
Another reason to show off those pearly whites! Women like men who have the ability to laugh. Even better, make the woman laugh. That instantly nets you bonus points!

5. Confidence
Women find confident men attractive. According to Dr Sameer Malhotra, head of psychiatry and psychotherapy department at Fortis Hospital in New Delhi, within the first few minutes of meeting, women will not only suss out your level of confidence, they will also interpret the vibes you give out and how you think. “Women notice how clear or decisive you are and whether you approach things positively.” Just remember, cockiness and arrogance are not the same as confidence!

6. Conversation
Men have successfully given womankind the impression of being strong and silent. So women aren't expecting you to have mad talking skills. All you've got to do hold her attention. “We know (scientifically) that the more or longer that a woman gets to know a man, the more physically attractive he becomes in her mind,” says Dr Patzer. Women are looking for someone to keep up the conversation -- so forget the one-liners, just be yourself!

Michelle Obama Wants To Divorce Barack Obama

“I’VE had enough!” Furious first lady Michelle Obama hurled those fighting words at her husband after he publicly humiliated her by flirting with a leggy blonde foreign leader at South African icon Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, sources say.
In a bombshell world exclusive, The ENQUIRER has learned that in the wake of the mortifying incident, President Barack Obama and his wife are now sleeping in separate White House bedrooms.
Sources say an enraged Michelle is also preparing to boot her hubby of 21 years out of their ritzy Chicago home – and seriously discussing divorce.
“The smart money says the marriage is doomed,” said a close source.
“Barack and Michelle have had a rocky go for years and mainly stayed together for their daughters and his political career.
“But now Michelle is mad AS hell. She feels violated in front of the whole world, and screamed at him, ‘I’ve had enough!’
“She’s met with divorce lawyers and told Barack that she wants a life apart from him.”
An Oval Office insider added: “Michelle will stay in the White House for the rest of Barack’s term for appearances’ sake, but she made it clear they’ll be leading separate lives.
“She’s moving into one of the vacant bedrooms in the family’s private living quarters, and she’s preparing to move his clothes and personal things out of their million-dollar house in Chicago.”
Sources say Michelle, 49, hit the roof after her lusty hubby was photographed brazenly flirting with Denmark’s dishy female prime minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, during the service for former South African president Mandela.
Obama, 52, laughed and whispered with the 46-year-old Danish beauty throughout the solemn ceremony, at one point cavalierly caressing her shoulder.
The two also playfully snapped a “selfie” photograph together while Michelle shot daggers at them.
The Danish press has dubbed Thorning-Schmidt “Gucci Helle” for her love of designer clothes.
While she lives in Copenhagen, her husband resides in Davos, Switzerland, and the couple’s accountant reportedly said that her husband was “gay or maybe bisexual.”
Obama’s outrageous antics with her made him the butt of international ridicule, with American media outlets going on the attack.
“New York Post” columnist Andrea Peyser blasted: “(Mandela) was a man who Obama compared at the memorial to Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King. And here was the president, publicly behaving as if he was plotting his next hook-up. It was unseemly.
“…Not to be outdone by the president’s bad behavior, the Danish hellcat hiked up her skirt to expose long Scandinavian legs covered by nothing more substantial than sheer black stockings.”
Famed body language expert Dr. Lillian Glass, who evaluated the photographs at The ENQUIRER’s request, was appalled at the president’s behavior. “This was clearly extremely humiliating for the first lady,” Dr. Glass told The ENQUIRER.
“The president effectively ignored her and acted like he and the Danish prime minister were the only two people around. And he did this with the whole world watching.
“The photos show Michelle going through a series of emotions, ranging from shock to anger and extreme jealousy. I think there are many changes occurring in their relationship.”
The president’s staff was also quick to criticize his horn-dog conduct, sources say.
“Barack already had enough headaches with his public approval rating plummeting after the disastrous rollout of his ‘Obamacare’ health plan. Now he’s walked smack into the worst marital crisis of his life,” said the White House insider.
“Behind the scenes, his advisers chewed him out, saying the photographic images of his frat-boy hijinks will haunt him forever.
“On top of that, women voters have bombarded the White House with letters, phone calls and emails expressing sympathy for the first lady and anger at the president.
“Even Obama’s top female advisers and friends like Valerie Jarrett were disappointed with him.”
Sadly for Michelle, the spectacle in South Africa wasn’t the first time the charmer-in-chief has crossed the line with other women.
But the couple’s fight over his behavior with the sexy Danish leader was the worst ever, “and they’ve had some doozies,” said the White House insider.
“Rather than unloading on him in South Africa, where their privacy was not guaranteed, or on Air Force One among other high-ranking dignitaries, including George and Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton, Michelle reserved her fury until they were back in their private quarters in the White House. Then she went ballistic behind closed doors.
“Barack has humiliated Michelle before, but this incident was played out on the world stage. Practically everybody on the planet saw what he did and realized that the president has absolutely no respect for his wife.”
Meanwhile, The ENQUIRER has learned the first couple plans to live nearly 5,000 miles apart when their days at the White House come to an end. Obama reportedly plans to settle in his native Hawaii, where his presidential library and political center will be located. Sources say he’ll live with his longtime pal Bobby Titcomb, who was busted for soliciting a prostitute in 2011.
Michelle will remain in Washington, D.C., until the couple’s youngest daughter Sasha, 12, finishes high school. Daughter Malia, 15, is a high school sophomore.
For now, Michelle is gearing up for a nasty divorce battle. But sources say she’ll most likely wait to slap Barack with divorce papers until after he leaves the Oval Office, when he’ll likely earn more than $30 million in book deals and bank $65 million in appearance fees.
“Now that Barack has embarrassed Michelle in front of the world, he’s going to pay a big, big price,” said the insider. “Michelle has said she wants a huge chunk of his net worth.
“This divorce is going to cost him a fortune.”

    Top speed: 362 km/h – 225 mph
    0-100 km/h: 3 seconds
    Cost: $450,000
The Gumpert Apollo was allegedly designed with such power and traction that it would be able to drive upside down in a tunnel at speeds of 321 km/h. While no one is known to have tested that theory yet, it’s 4.2 litre V8 engine and 650 hp should fill any stunt driver with confidence.

    9. ZENVO ST1
    Top speed: 374 km/h – 233 mph
    0-100 km/h: 2.9 seconds
    Cost: $1,225,000
The 100 per cent Danish made ST1 is the first attempt at a supercar by Zenvo, and they’ve set the bar pretty high for themselves. Each of the 15 models in existence are assured of ‘flying doctors’ should their 7 litre, twin-charged V8 engines ever come into trouble.

    8. MCLAREN F1
    Top speed: 386 km/h – 240 mph
    0-100 km/h: 3.2 seconds
    Cost: $970,000
Built in the late 1990s, the Mclaren F1 was an icon of its age becoming the world’s fastest ever road car in 1998 and probably the greatest supercar of the 20th Century. It still sits among the fastest cars in the world today thanks to its 60 degree, V12 engine producing 627 hp.

    7. KOENIGSEGG CCX
    Top speed: 394 km/h – 245 mph
    0-100 km/h: 3.2 seconds
    Cost: $545,568
The Swedish manufacturer makes a second appearance in the top ten, this time with the CCX and its 90 degree V8 engine producing 806 hp.

    6. SALEEN S7 TWIN-TURBO
    Top speed: 399 km/h – 248 mph
    0-100 km/h: 2.8 seconds
    Cost: $555,000
The Saleen S7 has an old school ‘90s look about it which just screams speed. A real tarmac-eater. Its all-aluminum, V8 engine with twin turbos produces 750 hp.

    5. 9FF GT9-R
    Top speed: 413 km/h – 257 mph
    0-100 km/h: 2.9 seconds

Another tie. What is essentially a customised Porsche 911, the GT9-R is fitted with a 4 litre, flat-6, twin-turbo engine, producing 1,120 hp. Such is its bespoke creation, all GT9-R’s are modified to the buyer’s taste with only 20 models ever made.

    0-100 km/h: 2.7 seconds
    Cost: $654,400
What was once the fastest car in the world – between the months of March 2007 to July 2010 – the SCC (Shelby SuperCars) Ultimate Aero uses a twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 1,183 horsepower. Its new sibling the Tuatura is expected to take over the mantle of SCC’s fastest car, and possibly even beat the Bugatti into top spot.

    3. KOENIGSEGG AGERA R
    Top speed: 418 km/h – 260 mph
    0-100 km/h: 2.9 seconds
    Cost: $1.6 million
A tie for second spot. While all of its 1,099 horsepower is fired out of a 5 litre, V8 engine with twin turbos, what makes the Agera R unique amongst supercars is its penchant for Winter sports. The top of the range Koenigsegg can be fitted with a ski box as well as Winter tyres, so don’t be surprised to see one of these at Europe’s most exclusive ski resorts.

    2. HENNESSEY VENOM GT
    Top speed: 418 km/h – 260 mph
    0-100 km/h: 2.5 seconds
    Cost: $950,000
The closest challenger to Bugatti’s crown, the Venom GT gets the most from a 6.2 litre, LS9 turbocharged V8 engine, also producing 1,200 hp. Hennessey believe the car has the potential to reach 442 km/h, which would propel it ahead of the Super Sport, but that speed is still to be tested and proven.

    1. BUGATTI VEYRON SUPER SPORT
    Top speed: 429 km/h – 267 mph
    0-100 km/h: 2.3 seconds
    Cost: $2.4 million
Having lost its title of the fastest car in the world in 2007, Bugatti reclaimed the top spot with the Veyron Super Sport in 2010, clocking a top speed of 429 km/h. Its huge 8 litre, W16 engine produces 1,200 hp, that’s 199 more horsepower than the original Veyron, which had a top speed of 407 km/h.

Tips to get the Whitest Teeth Ever!

A shining set of teeth can make anyone appear more pleasant, more healthy and young looking. Also nothing makes a smile more beautiful than sparkling white teeth. This is why many people avoid smiling in public places as their teeth are not as shiny as they want it to be.
Teeth may become yellow due to various reasons such as age, hereditary factors, improper dental hygiene, excessive consumption of tea and coffee, tobacco and cigarette. Even high doses of antibiotics along with some type of injury, climatic conditions, infection and improper metabolism can also contribute to discoloring of teeth.
Often people go for professional treatment to remove the yellow tinge from their teeth but such dental treatments need time as well money. In case you wish to get rid of yellow teeth you can try some natural remedies. There are many kitchen ingredients which you can use to make your teeth look like pearl white and that too without any side effects.

Here are top home remedies for Yellow Teeth.
1. Baking Soda
Baking soda is one of the best ingredients that you can use to get rid of your yellow teeth. You can make a whitening mouthwash with baking soda by mixing two tablespoon of baking soda with one cup of cold water. Now use this whitening mouthwash to rinse your mouth two to three times in a day. This remedy can easily correct minor yellow stains. At the same time you can also scrub your teeth gently for at least two minutes with diluted baking soda for sparkling teeth. Follow this remedy twice a week for the first week, and then follow it in every fifteen days. It is essential to note here that excess use of baking soda can strip your teeth of its natural enamel.

2. Strawberries
Strawberries contain good amount of vitamin C, which help in making your teeth whiter. Take a few strawberries and grind them to make a paste. Now use this paste to rub your teeth gently. If done twice daily for a few weeks, the yellow tinge on your teeth will vanish. Another option is to mix the pulp of one strawberry with half a teaspoon of baking soda and then spread the mixture onto your teeth and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Finally rinse out your mouth and brush your teeth with toothpaste to get rid of any residue.

3. Lemon
The bleaching property present in lemon can also be used to get rid of yellow teeth. In fact, gargling with lemon juice and scrubbing teeth with lemon peel is also one of the best ways to make your teeth white. Take a few drops of lemon juice and add some salt to it. Now apply this mixture on the stained teeth and rub the paste vigorously over your teeth and gums. Leave for a few minutes and then rinse your mouth properly with normal water. Follow this remedy twice daily for about two weeks to get rid of tartar and yellow tinge.

4. Apples
Apple is a kind of crunchy fruit that can scrub your teeth like a toothbrush and make your teeth look whiter than before. Try to eat one or two apples daily to get rid of the yellow stain accumulated on your teeth. When eating an apple make sure to chew them properly so that the acidic nature of apple and the fiber rich rough flesh get ample time to work on your teeth and help to remove the yellow stain. Apart from apples, you can also eat other crunchy food items such as raw carrots, cucumbers and broccoli.

5. Holy Basil
The leaves of holy basil have whitening properties and hence it can be used to make your teeth whiter. At the same time holy basil can also protect your teeth from gum problems such as pyorrhea. Take few leaves of holy basil and keep them in the sun for few hours. Once the holy basil leaves become dry you need to grind them to make some powder. Now mix this powder with your regular toothbrush and then use it to brush your teeth. Another option is to make a paste of holy basil leaves with mustard oil and then use it to clean your teeth.

6. Margosa
You can also use margosa to enjoy white healthy teeth. You can use margosa twigs as a toothbrush to brush your teeth. Chewing margosa branches helps in tackling teeth problems and clears the yellowness from the teeth. At the same time you can use margosa oil and mix it with your regular toothpaste and then use it to brush your teeth. Due to the astringent and antiseptic properties, regular use of margosa oil also help to get rid of bad breath and dental cavities.

President Barack Obama's official tribute to Nelson Mandela

The United States president, Barrack Obama has expressed his sympathy at the loss of Nelson Mandela.

In an official address minutes after Mandela’s death was announced, Obama said he drew inspiration from the great man’s life.

‘I cannot imagine my own life without Mandela’s example,’ Obama said.

Obama also acknowledged that Mandela’s achievement transcends what an ordinary man could garner.

‘Mandela achieved more than what could be expected of any man’, Obama added while he read a few quotes from the late legend.

The revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of apartheid battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.

With advancing age and bouts of illness, Mandela retreated to a quiet life at his boyhood home in the nation’s Eastern Cape Province, where he said he was most at peace. He was later moved to his home in the Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, where he died.

Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the consciousness of the nation and the world.

River mysteriously turns blood red

The Beirut River mysteriously turned blood red Wednesday after a stream of unidentified red liquid began pouring from the southern bank of the river in Furn al-Shubbak.
The source of the liquid had yet to be determined Wednesday evening, as the river continued to empty the red-colored water into the Mediterranean Sea.
Government and local officials rushed to the scene at the Chevrolet crossing of Furn al-Shubbak Wednesday morning in an attempt to locate the sewage canal that was dumping the red-colored water but they were unable to locate the source. Accusations were traded among officials from the municipalities of Hadath, Hazmieh, Sin al-Fil, Furn al-Shubbak and Shiyah.
Eyewitnesses working in the area told The Daily Star this was not the first time the river had turned a different color. Several business owners around the Chevrolet crossing said that colored water pours into the river roughly every two months but no one pays attention to it.It was the quantity and brightness of the red liquid that grabbed the attention of many passersby and commuters on different bridges in the city Wednesday.
Environment Minister Nazem Khoury said the source of the water was likely from Hazmieh or Baabda.
“I call on the municipalities of Hazmieh and Baabda to cooperate swiftly to find the source of the pollution and its type,” Khoury said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, Khoury sent an environmental team to the area to examine the water. The team, headed by ministry official Bassam Sabbagh, took a sample of the water to determine its composition and whether it contained dangerous pollutants.
The samples will be examined Thursday because state laboratories were already closed by the time the sample was taken. “The sample we took will be examined tomorrow [Thursday] morning ... and we will know whether it is blood being mixed with water or if it is some sort of a color dumped in it,” said Sabbagh.
A similar incident took place in the Chinese Jian River last December after a factory illegally dumped red dye into the river, which is located in the northern Chinese province of Henan.
Some cities use non-toxic dyes to color rivers on special occasions. In Chicago, the river is dyed green every year in the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.
According to Sabbagh, test results will help the ministry determine whether the substance is a chemical pollutant or blood from a nearby slaughterhouse.
“First we thought it was blood, but it seems like it is a kind of coloring dumped by a factory,” said Sabbagh, who also said that the test to determine the type of the chemical would take a week.
Sabbagh said the municipality and other ministries should help the Environment Ministry in its investigation. “We need the help of the local officials to have a clear idea of the sewage network in the region,” he said.
According to Sabbagh, who heads the ministry’s Environmental Pollution Control Office, maps of the sewage network would help officials locate the source of the red-colored water.
“After finding the source, it would be a matter of hours to get to the factory and the area where the [colored] water is originating,” said Sabbagh adding that swift action would be taken against those responsible for it.
Saad Elias, an adviser to the environment minister, did not rule out the possibility that a slaughterhouse could be behind the red color.
“After going through several phases of butchering at the slaughterhouses, they store huge amounts of blood and animal parts in containers ... they might have dumped them into a sewage canal,” said Elias.
“The ministry will definitely investigate this matter because our role is to prevent pollution,” he added.
Meanwhile, local officials in the area suggested that a paint factory could be responsible for the incident. “There are several paint factories in Hadath,” said an official from the Shiyah municipality.
As officials tried to determine the source and the nature of the substance in the river, the Beirut prosecutor assigned the Internal Security Forces to launch an investigation into the matter.

Bad Breath?

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, fetor oris, ozostomia or stomatodysodia is an unpleasant smell that is given off from the nose or mouth of an individual when he or she breathes or speaks.

Causes of bad breath
  • Types of food or drinks ingested: Foods with strong odours like onions and garlic; exotic spices like curry, thyme and cinnamon and beverages like coffee, when ingested and digested, are absorbed into the bloodstream from where they enter the lungs and are expelled when breathing. And unfortunately, even after brushing and flossing, their smell doesn't go away unless they've completely passed through the blood system.

  • Poor dental hygiene: Improper cleaning of dentures (artificial teeth) and failure to (properly) brush, floss and tongue scrape daily causes food particles to remain between the teeth, gums and on the tongue which causes bad breath.

  • Use of depressants and stimulants: Depressants and stimulants like tobacco (smoked, chewed or sniffed) and alcohol enter the bloodstream from where they make their way to the lungs and are also expelled when breathing.

  • Health problems: Health problems like gum disease, candidiasis (yeast infection), xerostomia (dry mouth which can be caused by continuous breathing through the mouth), diabetes, pneumonia, sore throat, and Gastro Esophageal Reflex Disease (GEAD) which is the backflow of acid from the stomach to the mouth and also, damaged internal organs like the liver and kidney release toxins which are expelled through the nose and mouth and cause bad breath.

  • Lack of carbohydrate: High protein and low carbohydrate consumption causes the body to burn stored fats for fuel and leads to a condition known as ketosis because as fat burns, ketones are built up in the body and are released through breathing.

  • Treatment of bad breath
Make sure you brush, floss and tongue scrape at least twice daily (see image below). Tongue scrapers are sold in pharmacies but if you can't get one, use a teaspoon.
Drink plenty of fluids especially water so as to prevent saliva imbalance which causes dry mouth.
Quit the use of tobacco and alcohol.
Limit spicy foods, coffee and other foods with strong odours.
Take more of wholegrain carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables.
Take tea, as polyphenol present in tea plant helps hinder bacteria growth.
Take sugarless gums as they contain xylotol which kills bacteria and reduces plague but note that the use of gums, mints and mouthwash only stop bad breath temporarily.
Finally, you might need to consult your dentist or doctor as the bad breath could be due to health factor.

TOP 10 SECRETS OF FIRST CLASS STUDENTS

Here are the top ten most powerful secrets that are known by only few students who emerge with First class, get this secrets now and join this team of outstanding scholars.

    1) NATURAL BRILLIANCE:
There is a minimum level of natural brilliance that is required before a student can think of First Class. I do not intend to put limit to one’s capabilities, for I believe like most people that impossible is nothing. However, realistically speaking, that is an exception to the rule. Most First Class students have a track record from lower levels of education. That is the first foundation.

    2) THE POWER OF DREAM:
Most first class students dream. I do not mean metaphysical dream, I mean the Luther King definition – vision, forward- looking, even though awake. In secondary school I had a friend who once looked up and said, ‘the last time someone made an aggregate 6 (i.e minimum of 6 A1’s in SSCE) in this school was 12 years ago, I want to be the next’. He made it. Same boy told me he wanted to ‘enter the back of JAMB brochure’, meaning he wanted to be among the top 3 JAMB students in Nigeria (JAMB print at the back of the brochure for a year the names of the best 3 candidates in the prior year’s examinations). He didn’t make it, but he scored 296. When this friend of mine entered Ife, he went to his faculty’s board, where names of best students are engraved every year, looked up and said, ‘when I leave this school after five years i want my name written on this board’. He worked for it. He didn’t make it. But he not only came out with a CGPA north of 4.7 (of the possible 5.0) but he also emerged as one of his faculty’s best. After that, he told someone that he wanted to have his PhD without doing Master’s degree. The person told him it was hardly possibly, and counted on his fingertips the number of Nigerians that performed that feat. My friend proved our doubter wrong. He got the PhD at age 29, skipping Master’s. That's the power of dream.

    3) COMPETITION:
What most people don’t know is that there is usually a subtle competition among best students in classes. The competition is not necessarily unhealthy. They may be –and in fact usually are – friends, but they compete. In my undergraduate days, story is told of a guy that, at the beginning of every semester, went to ask what X, the best student in †ђξ class immediately preceding his, scored in each course and he would tell those cared to listen to him that he would break the record and score higher than him. He did, most times. Most First Class students compete. Each wants to be the highest scorer in each subject. That is why it is always good to go to a competitive institution, rather than enjoy local championship status without stiff competition.

    4) CALCULATION:
When you see some students reading a purely theoretical course and having calculator by the side, don ’t think they are insane or doing. over-syllabus’. No they are just running the permutations – if I score B in this course, what will my CGPA be? What is the worst case scenario? What is the best case scenario? How many A’s do I need to make X-CGPA? etc. These are calculations that go on in their heads. Some don’t even compute their GP’s at the end of a semester, they have the template in their heads already, having done the permutations over and over again even before writing the examinations, and they just insert the course scores into their mental template.

    5) OPTIMISTIC MENTALITY:
Some students die many times before their academic death. How can a student gain admission into a school and the first thing he hears is, you can never make a First Class, they wont give you. Well, I don’t believe this. This is what kills many students. How can you go to battle with a defeatist mentality and expect to win? Many First Class students defy these “messengers of doom” and pursue their target optimistically. I finished from the Obafemi Awolowo University and this is one thing I must commend students of the school for. As a Jambite, what you hear are stories of one Deji Akere that shattered school records, or one Hammed Shittu that effortlessly broke any record breakable. You even hear of stories of students that had graduated since the 1970s. These are stories that motivate you, not some tale by moonlight about a sadist lecturer denying you First class. This is another very vital feature of First Class students. They don’t believe rooster and bull stories.

    6) ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT:
Academic environment also helps. In a school where you spend most of your time queuing for water or transport or forced to read with candle, chances of academic success are very low. This is why Nigerian students do well abroad where they have all the facilities and learning is conducive. This is also why schools like OAU, UI and to some extent, Unilag, with strong students body that fight for students welfare like good transport system, power on campus, good water system etc, produce more First Class students. Same for private schools, where there is little or no worry about welfare.

    7) COURSE OF STUDY:
Course of study is another very important factor. It is better to choose a course you ® interested in, not one you are forced to do. Some otherwise brilliant students don ’t perform up to potential because they are not interested in what they are studying in the university.

    8) THE EARLY YEARS ARE CRITICAL:
Some students get taken away by the euphoria of being a university student and spend their first year playing around. Still, in some schools, year 1 performance is not aggregated as part of the overall grade. For most students, after performing woefully in their first two years, they now grab straw to salvage the situation in the later years. Needless to say, it is most times a futile exercise. But there are cases of great come- backs.

    9) KNOW THYSELF:
The problem with many student is they try to ‘copy-cat’. While it is good to learn from †ђξ method of another high performer, it is important to know how to adapt it. Some students don’t need to read for more than 3 hours a day before they pass, indeed do excellently well and top the class. Some must read for at least 7 hours a day. I know First Class students that watched football and participated actively in campus religious activities. Some even get involved in departmental politics. It is about knowing oneself. But for most First Class students I
know, reading the notes while still hot, and not waiting till they accumulate, is a common denominator.

    10) KNOW YOUR LECTURER:
Knowing how to approach a question in an examination is an art itself. How do you organize your answers? It goes beyond just picking the answer script and writing down what you think is the answer. Know what the lecturer wants. Does he want ‘lengthy story’? Or he wants it ‘short and snappy’? You may have a clue into this through your seniors who had taken the course earlier. First class students study not only the course, but the course-taker.

How To Succeed As A Graphic Designer

A freelance graphic designer is a profitable and rewarding career for individuals who have a natural talent for design. One of the best benefit of working as a freelance graphic designer is that you can easily work on your own terms and time. Here are 10 expert tips to help you succeed as a freelance graphic designer.

    1. Find your niche:
Are you a print or digital designer? Are you a web designer or brand identity specialist? Before you dive into the competitive freelance design word, learn what you’re great at, master it, and then use it as your unique selling point to potential clients.

    2. Develop your own personal style:
Spend some time developing your personal artistic style to help set you apart from the gazzilion other freelance designers.

    3. Market yourself:
Obviously you will need clients in order to succeed as a freelance graphic designer. To build clients, you must market yourself. Every designer has a different marketing strategy, but based on my experience you should:
Showcase your work on several online creative platforms; Behance, Coroflot, Krop and DeviantArt

Try paid advertising; Google Adwords, Solo Ads

Guest blog on leading design blogs

Start your own design blog. If you need help getting started, sign up for Empower Network viral blogging system

Build a stunning portfolio site. If you do not have extensive web design or coding experience, consider using WordPress and purchase a creative portfolio theme from Themeforest or MojoThemes

    4. Manage your time and bill accordingly:
As a freelance designer, managing your time is essential. To be successful, you will also be communicating with clients and marketing your freelance practice frequently. Consider using Paydirt, an online time tracking and invoice software and Basecamp, an online project management software. Although Basecamp and Paydirt are not free, both platforms are extremely valuable to freelance designers.

    5. Don’t take on too much work:
Do yourself a favor by not taking on any work that you do not have the time or capacity for. Your reputation is everything so do not ruin it by putting out shitty work because you were overwhelmed.

    6. Don’t take on any type of work:
Be selective of the work you take on, especially as a new freelancer. The clients you choose to work for are a representation of you as a designer.

    7. Reward returning clients:
    The equation is quite simple.
Loyal clients = guaranteed business = steady income.
If you want to earn a steady income from your freelance design practice, work on building a loyal client list. For instance, offer special discounted rates to returning clients.

    8. Keep learning:
There is always room to grow no matter how much experience you have. Take online courses or other educational methods to enhance your design and/or technical skills.

    9. Don’t follow the latest design trends:
It’s important to be knowledgeable of current design trends, but you do not have to follow them. Your goal as a designer is to create timeless work and most design trends come and go.

10: Don’t budge (At-least not all the time):
Many freelancers often lower their rates to accommodate clients. You may need to adjust your pricing for the right client or work, but such action should be done occasionally. If a client does not think your work and time is worthy of the price you’ve presented, then they weren’t worthy of working with you.

Deadly Mistakes Every Student Makes Unknowingly

Every day we come across a lot of people, mostly young individuals with vision for a brighter tomorrow. But when you sit with them and ask the deeper questions as to why they make some decisions, they seem to have no clue to what they have done. Analyzing the situation, I came across some blunder that they have committed on the long run, amongst them are five listed below:

    THINKING INSIDE THE BOX
As a statement it sounds very okay, but its contextual meaning in the educational terrain, seems bizarre. Most students today do not actually know what is happening around them, as all they seem concerned about is classes, reading textbooks and materials given to them by their respective lecturers… so in the long run, they get good grades and they are promoted to the next level. Does it actually end there?
Many have forgotten that school is just an eye opener to what the real world offers. That is why today we have graduates with 1st class and 2nd class with no specific skill and they complain of not been employed, when they cannot even open MSWORD with a mouse or even shutdown a computer. They would go ahead to blame the witches of their mother’s and father’s land for every misfortune when in the real sense they cannot even hold down a steady conversation on topics like sports, politics, music, books… think outside the box and see what the real world has got to offer.
“School will only sharpen you but your skills will decorate you”

LEARNING TO WRITE A CV MENTALITY
Knowing the entails of writing a very good CV is not a bad idea in its own sense. But have you asked yourself what life will be like without writing a CV? Or is it a bad idea to have people submitting to you as against you submitting yours and putting your fate and destiny in another person hands, when sometimes they would not even look through it, is that not touching?.
I believe writing a CV in the long run will condition your mind that you have to be employed by a person which is not a bad idea in its self, but the truth is you will never get a better shot at life. But not putting all your effort into writing a CV, will open a window of opportunity because then your thinking is not caged and thus, while you think of a person employing you, you can also think of creating employment and employing others, a win-win situation right?.
But come to think of it, the wealthiest and influential people in the world today never sat down to write a CV (In doubt? Google is your friend). So friend, instead use that paper as a drawing board and sketch the structure of a perfect business plan with the little you have and see your little efforts become positively viral.
“Do not waste time thinking on how to write a killer and enticing CV, instead waste that time in thinking how you can make your life better even with your little resources.”

    SELF PITY AND REGRETS
The duos are perfect dream assassins. Do not ever plunge into their arms. For nothing should you regret where you find yourself, what course you are studying… or pity yourself for nothing, because if you do, you will never make it in life.
Do not sit and compare yourself to your neighbors who are studying engineering, medicine, law or what have you, for they do not guarantee life security. Your security comes from within, so please overlook the bandwagon that scorn your course of study and focus on building a niche for yourself in any sector that you find yourself.
Look deep and realize what it is you love doing most and then go ahead to integrate it with what you are doing now and if you do not make it in life, doubt my credibility. Life and wealth is up for grabs to those that are daring, so let others waste their time in laughter while it actually becomes your driving force and motivator.

    WRONG COMPANY
You want to be a success, please do not be found in the wrong side of town.
If you should have friends, I recommend people who are better and well experienced than you or you can look for people who are on the same wavelength with you, be it in aspirations and driving factors.
Friends can so influence you that I can say categorically that sometimes whatever you become is directly an impact from the actions of the friend you keep. Show me your friend and I will tell who you are.
Do not mingle with loafers, cultist, jesters, party captains and lords, smokers and sniffers… or else by now I think you should know that your life is taking a headlong fall into the ocean of destruction.
In short, anyone that cannot add to your life in any way (physically, spiritually, morally, technically…) should be BLACKLISTED. There should be no room for complacency, because the road is far ahead and any extra baggage should be dropped.
“The more friends you have, the more fun you will have. The fewer friend you have, the fewer your problems!”

    NO PLAN
This is the deadliest of all mistakes, because if you have not set any plans for tomorrow, brother, this is a free ride to failure, no hidden charges.
We all join the rat race to higher institutions and after that what’s next? We get hooked up in life’s traffic jam!
The main reason you will fail is when you do not even have a plan, so study medicine or guidance and counseling, but without plans, you are NOTHING!
Learn to set goals and plan on how to achieve them. Set task and work towards them. Do not ever think that your parents will always be there to pay your bills or feel you will always get free food and rides. That’s a big fantasy, wake up!
Make achievable plans and set structures to meet them, it might take weeks or months, but what matters is that you are working towards something, unlike others who are working towards nothing.
“He who fails to plan, has definitely planned to fail”

15 SECRETS OF GETTING ANY SCHOLARSHIP OF YOUR CHOICE.

Many students need some form of financial support to be able get a decent education. In this digital age, your ability to access timely information and strategically utilize such will determine whether you win a scholarship or not. The days are gone when you have to go to the ministry of education or your school library to queue for scholarship information. Now you have all that at the tip of your fingers. In this article, I will show you 15 easy steps you can follow to win enough money for school, and fulfill your dream!

      1. START SEARCHING EARLY:
Most of us probably start searching for scholarships when we start admission application, and suddenly discover that we can’t afford to pay the fees. This is erroneous as you may not have enough time to find the scholarships that might be of the highest relevance to you. Start as early as possible. If you are in high school and you are interested in going to university, start searching in your last two years in school . If you will need scholarship for graduate studies, start searching while in the university . The rule is simple: the earlier the better! However, if you are reading this and you did not start early, there is hope.

      2. BEWARE OF SCHOLARSHIP SCAMS:
Except in very rare cases, which the sponsor(s) should clearly state in the official announcement, scholarship applications are completely free . Never give money to anybody who promises to secure a scholarship for you for a fee. If you had enough money to throw around, I suppose you wouldn’t be applying for a scholarship. That is why they are called scholarships ? meant to help a student, who would otherwise not be able, get an education. You should be very wary of giving somebody your money in the guise of a promised scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on competition and the most suitable candidates are awarded after evaluating qualified applications. Instead of giving money to somebody to secure you a scholarship, invest your time and resources in searching for them and preparing winning applications.

      3. SEARCH WHERE YOU MATTER:
You don’t want to waste all your time and money on the internet without getting good value for it. Do you? That is why you should search for scholarships where you are †ђξ. priority of the information provider. Generally, www.fastweb.com is considered the most comprehensive source of scholarship opportunities for students.

      4. READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY:
This is an expensive mistake you should never make. Don’t be so excited about a scholarship that you fail to carefully read ALL †ђξ instructions line by line. Even if you have read the instructions for previous years, certain rules might have changed and the only way to know is to read everything. You never lose anything by gathering sufficient information. Unfortunately, many students want to have it on a platter of gold. They want it delivered without any efforts on their part. There is nowhere money is easy to get, and no one who has worked hard to get money will give it to you for being lazy. Be diligent and read all the instructions because you can only win when you obey instructions as stated in the scholarship profile. If you have any reason not to meet any criteria, you should contact the scholarship provider to ask for exception. Otherwise, you risk not being considered.

      5. APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS YOU ARE ELIGIBLE:
Scholarship sponsors have eligibility criteria for awarding scholarships, which are often strictly adhered to. Such criteria might be based on nationality, sex, subject of study, professional experience, age, etc. There is no point applying for scholarships you are not eligible. Sponsors receive more qualified applications for each scholarship than there are slots, so they may not consider those who do not meet the eligibility criteria.

      6. DON’T PUT YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET:
Apply for as many scholarships as you ® eligible. Again, you lose nothing by applying. There is no guarantee that you will win a particular scholarship and the only way to ensure you don’t lose out eventually is to apply for as many as possible so that somehow you may win one. You should also apply for small scholarships and those open to minority groups that you qualify for, which are often less competitive. The state of world economies now implies that fewer students can sufficiently fund their studies without scholarships, which has led to stiffer competitions for the few available opportunities. So make use of every avenue to get funds for school.

      7. ORGANIZE YOUR APPLICATION
      MATERIALS:

Different scholarships require different application materials. The most common ones are personal statement or letter, recommendation letter, statement of account, transcripts, CV/resume, autobiographical essay, and professional essay. (The explanation of these terms is beyond the scope of this article. More explanations will be available in a few days on this section). Once you have all your materials ready, DO NOT merely forward them to every new scholarship application. Save your original materials in your email or Google Docs (if you have a Gmail Account) so that you can access them anywhere you need them. To apply for a new scholarship, simply download them and customize them for each scholarship provider. Each scholarship providerhas specific questions and expectations; make sure you revise your letters to reflect such expectations. A forwarded letter or statement is usually very easy to identify and it may give a very bad impression of you as a lazy and unserious person. Some sponsors may even consider it insulting.

      8. SET YOUR DEADLINE BEFORE THE
      SCHOLARSHIP REAL DEADLINE:

This might sound too obvious but one would be surprised to discover how many people miss scholarship deadlines every year. Either due to negligence or carelessness, many applicants simply occupy themselves with other things until application deadlines have passed. Never make this mistake.
